Debuting in 2020, A Wonderful World, a new musical about Louis Armstrong, tells the story of his life, music and singular legacy through the voices of his four wives. Teaming up with my husband, Michael O. Mitchell (Apollo Theater; Broadway: Motown), we are commissioned by Miami New Drama to write, arrange and orchestrate the score for this important new piece.
Alongside scriptwriter Aurin Squire (This Is Us, The Good Fight), choreographer Rickey Tripp (The Choir Boy, Jesus Christ Superstar Live), and director Christopher Renshaw (Drama Desk winner and Tony nominee). The brand new musical is scheduled to world premiere at the Colony Theater in Miami in 2021.
My new music release highlights the resilience of individualism that refuses to conform to that of a mechanical artist. The track includes an internationally accomplished powerhouse band featuring Andre Cleghorn on bass, Daiquan Davis on drums, Senfaub Stone on percussion, and myself on piano.
One of my greatest joys as a musician is to take a familiar melody and reimagine it through the lens of my classical training. I am thrilled to announce my latest single, “Ain’t Nobody,” a dynamic, tribal piano-driven interpretation of Chaka Khan’s instantly recognizable hit. This energetic cover, with an accompanying video filmed and directed by cinematographer Jordan Battiste, brings a new sense of urgency and passion to a soulful classic.
